Hey, I'm back to energise on how to analyse the therapeutic functions of the various decoctions part 74 for the new formula, the Huang Lian Jie Du Tang.
In the first formula:-
Huang Lian Jie Du Tang, uses:
- Huang Lian - to clear upper body heat
- Huang Qin - to clear mid body heat
- Huang Bai - to lower body heat
- Zhi Zi - to clear San Jiao heat
It is very laxative and application must be very cautious. Therefore
Huang Lian Jie Du Tang is capable of removing the heat and related wetness inclusive of heat due to overall deficiency.
As a rule of thumb, it is very appropriate to apply:
(Qing Re Zhao Shi Xie Huo Jie Du Tui Xu Re) whenever Huang Lian Jie Du Tang is used.
Next, Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang
Huang Lian and Huang Qin both remain as the Monarch's herb as they are primarily the ingredients to remove Heat accumulated especially in the upper and mid body respectively.
It is not so laxative like Huang Lian Jie Du Tang because Huang Bai and Zhi Zi are replaced by the following herbs:
- Gan Jiang(minister)
- Ban Xia(minister)
- Ren Sheng(messenger)
- Gan Cao(messenger)
- Da Zao(messenger)
Both Gan Jiang and Ban Xia possess the property of warm and pungent(xin wen) indicating that they can warm and open up the accumulated cold causing these heat in the mid-section.
Since there are cold force and heat force combating in the mid-section and they are actually causing vomitting in the upper section and dysentery in the lower section in the TCM perspective.
And therefore Gan Jiang by virtue of its own property can subdue vomitting and comfort the Irritability of the mid section by warming up the stomach and regulate the air passage pathways back to its comfort zone.
The difference between Gan Jiang and Sheng Jiang is:
Basically,
Gan Jiang
- Dry, warm up the zhong jiao
- Don't make perspiration and overcome flu symptom
Sheng Jiang
- Wet or raw type, create perspiration easily and overcome flu symptom
And I had introduced this important point in the previous blog that changes in the quantity to bring about the result each time, especially when you see 2 herbs are combined to give a peculiar function.
Again, they are:
- Quantity changes in terms of weight
- The main function after the changes
- Quantity changes in terms of weight
- The main function after the changes
So it is good idea to jot down the new changes from now onwards.
In terms of the quantity, Gan Jiang has to be increased to 66% of the Huang Lian being the monarch's herb in the decoction. This would match with Ban Xia for having the same weigh.
Alway remember when Gan Jiang combined with Ban Xia:
As a rule of thumb,
Apply (wen wei he zhong kai jie san han zhi ou) whenever Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang is used
The remaining herbs:
- Ren Sheng
- Gan Cao
- Da Zao
combined to perform one function:
- Warm up and invigorate the Qi and it's deficiency.
I would like to leave the Sheng Jiang Xie Xin Tang and Gan Cao Xie Xin Tang to the next blog so as to give you more time to digest this blog.
Although my picture-diagram is very simple, please remember the GOLDEN
WORDS in yellow colour.
Best of all
Xiong
