How To Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions Part Thirty Six

Hey, I'm back to discuss today's new subject and it has been two weeks already passed and was unable to keep you abreast with our topic's progress.  I'm so sorry.  Anyway, have you try to analyse the discrimination between the two formulae:

  • Ding Chuan Tang
  • Ma Xing Shi Gao Tang

Nevertheless, this is how to analyse the therapeutic functions of the various decoctions

The Discrimination

We're still on the same topic:

  • hot phlegm trapped deeply
and l'm going to start with terminology difference; that is the difference between the 2 Qing Xie as shown in the diagram below.  Let's name them as (A) and (B) respectively.
Here is the difference; (B) can be used as (A) , however (A) cannot be used as (B).  This is because (B) is more stingent than (A).  Both refer as able to purge out the accumulated heat, however (B) is more severe and vigorous in strength than (A).

So we would go on to the formulae to illustrate these 2 words(A) and (B) together more vividly.

Ding Chuan Tang

In this decoction, Huang Qin and Sang Bai Pi combined to purge the heat accumulated in the Lung.

Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang

Over here, Shi Gao is used to force out the heat accumulated in the Lung at a stronger and effective level.

This means that Shi Gao can be used in Ding Chuan Tang to replace Huang Qin and Sang Bai Pi, however Huang Qin and Sang Bai Pi could not be used to replace Shi Gao in Ma Xing Shi Gao Tang as Shi Gao has 3 times the power of Ma Huang to remove accumulated heat in the Lung. (Research has shown that Shi Gao is more powerful in purging heat from the body against other herbs such as Ma Huang, therefore must be used with precaution).  By now, I believe you should comprehend why (B) can replace (A) but (A) cannot replace (B). Right, I should move on now.

Other differentaions:

Ding Chuan Tang
Common symptoms are:
  • Intermittent Fever and chills
  • Short of breathe (mild dyspnea)
  • Tongue coating is thick and yellowish

Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang
Common symptoms are:
  • Nasal flaring
  • More severe asthma observed
  • Thirsty (mild polydipsia)
  • Common flu symptoms such as running nose and cough still not clear
  • Therefore tongue coating is slightly yellowish

So, when it is time to make a decision to use which decoction during real practice would be based on the observations and experience taken with weight shift to the correct diagnosis.

I'll leave you now so that you would have more time to draw up the other methods like the threshold established so far to analyse which decoction to use verse the above observations.

Best of all,

Xiong
