How To Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions Part Twenty Six

Hey, I'm back to discuss with you the effect of the messenger's herb, when 
  • Da Zao 
meet with Sheng Jiang which supposed to serve as the Minister's herb in the decoction. Very excited and interesting, don't they?  It would rise to its climax with the revelation of the half verdict wrapping up this blog. 

Normally, it is common to use 

  • Gan Cao 

to regulate the whole decoction to become more digestive to be absorbed by the child. 

As our present topic is to 

  • dissolve cold sticky phlegm 

and therefore the condition of the child should be found to have weakness in both the spleen and stomach. This would be 

  • a typical Spleen-Stomach allover deficiency.  

So the application of Da Zao with Sheng Jiang in this duo-function is to warm and back up this deficiency.

This is how to analyse the therapeutic function of the various decoction. (part 26)

Messenger's Herb - Da Zao

It is better known as 
  • Ziziphus Jujuba 
and only the ripened fruits are used.  Da Zao is also commonly known as 
  • Red Dates 
and the criteria must be large and fresh.


The primary healing properties of  Da Zao are as follows:
  • Strengthen Zhong Qi
  • Invigorate blood and calm palpitation
  • reconcile and harmonise the effects of various herbs to a moderate digestive level.

As a rule of thumb, apply:
  • (Gan Wen Bu Qi Yang Xue An Shen) 
whenever Da Zao is used. 

Let's analyse them in detail with the thresholds established as:


Association to the Specific Meridian Channel


Da Zao is associated with the following meridian channels:

  • Spleen
  • Stomach - respectively 

Specific Taste


The specific taste of Da Zao is
  • Sweet 

Specific Property


The specific property of Da Zao is
  • Warm

The combination of these 2 herbs is the effect on the following:

It 
  • upholds and 
  • stabilises body innate defence mechanism. 

It 
  • complements each other using Xin Wen of Sheng Jiang  and Gan Wen of Da Zao to warm the Lung and to 
  • dissolve this sticky phlegm repeatedly. 


Half Verdict Revelation


All right, I've discuss all the important things with She Gan Ma Huang Tang for you to memorise easily.
And the real usage or application of this decoction is: 
  • when there are lots of phlegm with wheezing sound in the throat which is particularly useful point to take note.

Next, what are the common treatment using this decoction and they are:
  • Acute upper respiratory infection
  • Chronic bronchitis 
  • Chronic obstructive palmonary disease
