Without delay, the 2 minister's herbs are:

Minister's herbs

  • Huang Qin
  • Huang Lian

This is how to Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions part forty nine.

Let's start with the threshold established so far:

Association to a Specific Meridian Channel

Huang Qin is better known as Scutellaria Baicalensis or chinese skullcap and belongs to the family of Lamiaceae and only the root is used.

Huang Qin is associated with the:
  • Lung
  • Large Intestine
  • Gall Bladder
  • Small Intestine Meridian Channels respectively

Therefore Huang Qin has a direct link to the Lung and travels there to supplement and fuel the power of the monarch's herbs .
As a rule of thumb, it is very appropriate to apply:
  • (Ku Han Qing Re Zao Shi Xie Huo Jie Du Zhi Xue An Tai)
whenever Huang Qin is used.

This means the combined application of:
  • the Bitter taste
  • Cooling effect
to disperse the heat accumulation due to superficial syndrome of heat and wetness unresolved which is the root cause.   The primary healing properties of Huang Qin is as follows:

Huang Lian is associated with the:
  • Heart
  • Large Intestine

Basically, Huang Lian compliments Huang Qin and shares quite similar treatment property as Huang Qin.  Moreover Huang Lian would heal:
  • Diarrhoea as a result of heat and wetness stagnated at Stomach and Intestine.
  • Pain and swelling of eye and ear as a result of severe heat accumulated.
  • Carbuncle formed.

As a rule of thumb, it is very appropriate to apply:

whenever Huang Lian is used.

Specific Taste

Huang Qin and Huang Lian possess a bitter taste.
