Although each formula has its own specific purpose and I'll discriminate between them in the next blog after this analysis.
Just to refresh your memory, our theme for these 3 formulae is the removal of heat and wetness which fits into our original topic; accumulated heat would combine with the wetness and turn into what TCM termed as Fire*** which will cause intermittent fever working within the perimeter.

The primary application of Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan is:   Removing
  • Wetness
  • Turbidity
  • Heat
And the pathological situation lies in the Qi level, where

  • Sore throat

This Is How To Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions Part Fifty Eight

Hey,  I'm back to commence on the analysis of the  Yin Chen Hao Tang and reiterate that Zhi Zi would not be analysed in this blog.  Please refer to my blog: part 47 published in February 2023 as a quick revision for Zhi Zi.

Although I'm not repeating the analysis of Zhi Zi, it is necessary to list out one important (must memorise) point to be mentioned here regarding the application and selection of Zhi Zi as the minister's herb is:
  • Unblock the passage of San Jiao; guiding heat and wetness downward via urination

Without delay, the Division 4th Officer's herb is:

Da Huang

This is how to Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions part 58.  The reasons for selection of Da Huang as the Division 4th Officer's herb are:

  • 1) Da Huang is a natural powerful laxative
  • 2) It is to assist the monarch's herb to purge the heat and wetness out of the body via defecation

Let's start with the threshold established so far:

Association to a Specific Meridian Channel

Da Huang is better known as Rheum palmatum and belongs to the family Polygonaceae and only the root and rhizome are used.

Da Huang is associated with the:
  • Spleen
  • Stomach
  • Liver
  • Heart
  • Large Intestine - meridian channels respectively

Specific Taste

Da Huang possesses a bitter taste.

Specific Properties

Next, I'll touch on the specific property of
  • Da Huang
which is cold.

As a rule of thumb,

Apply (Ku Han Qing Re Xie Huo Jie Du Hou Xue Qu Yu) whenever Da Huang is used.

I'll leave you now so that there is more time to digest this blog and be back soonest with the next formula.

Best of all,

Xiong
