How To Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions Part Twenty Two

Hey, I'm back to discuss the discrimination between

  • Yin Qiao San and
  • San Ju Yin

and I feel so excited, do you?  Time flies, don't they? We've done quite a bit and learned more in-depth about TCM.  Anyway, without delay, let's move on.

This is how to analyse the therapeutic function of the various decoction. (part 22)

Messenger's Herb - Gan Cao

Once again, I need not have to analyse the therapeutic function of the various decoction repeatedly, in this case, there is only one herb to be used, the:

  • Gan Cao

Verdict Revelation

The differentiation between the two decoctions:
  • Yin Qiao San and
  • Sang Ju Yin
is very straightforward.  These are the common herbs found in both decoctions:
  • Lian Qiao
  • Jie Geng
  • Bo He
  • Lu Gen
  • Gan Cao
And the difference between them is Yin Qiao San has these other herbs:
  • Jin Yin Hua - Gan Liang Tou Xie Qing Re
  • Jing Jie Sui - Xin Wen Tou Zhen Jie Du
  • Dou Chi - Xin Gan Jie Biao Chu Fan
  • Niu Bang Zi - Xin Han Tou Zhen Li Yan
  • Zhu Ye - Gan Han Qing Re Chu Fan Li Niao
With Sang Ju Yin has these other herbs:
  • Sang Ye - Gan Ku Liang Qing Re-Run Hou Ming Mu
  • Ju Hua - Xin Gan Ku Liang Qing Re Xiao Yan Ming Mu
  • Xing Ren - Gan Ku Wen Chu Fan Qing Xin Huo Run Fei Zhi Ke Jiang Qi
The direct explanations of all those functions of individual herbs in (red) are found in my previous blogs.  The only difference for Jing Jie Sui found in Yin Qiao San is; that it has a lukewarm property that passes unnoticeable yet formidable in the whole decoctionThen, why is Jing Jie Sui being used instead of any other herbs?  The underlining reason being it can rise and combine effectively with Jin Yin Hua and Lian Qiao to vent through the hot wind flu invasion from the interior to the surface and out of the body in the TCM perspective.  The rest of the 4 other herbs would complement each other in:
  • Relieving heat accumulated flu
  • Eliminating carbuncle

Therefore Yin Qiao San is earmarked to be effective and inclined to:

  • remove heat
  • relieve symptoms such as running nose, sore throat and rashes.

Next, I'll analyse the 3 simple herbs in Sang Ju Yin which have one similarity to Yin Qiao San; the lukewarm property of Xing Ren.  However, the other 2 properties are Gan(sweet) and Ku(bitter) and their combination would lubricate the Lung and remove the heat from the Heart.  The rest of the 2 herbs combined effectively  to complement each other as follows:
  • Sang Ye lubricates the throat
  • Ju Hua reduces inflammation
with Xing Ren relieving the cough.

Therefore Sang Ju Yin is earmarked to be effective and inclined to:

  • Ease and drop cough

As I mentioned before, the decision to apply Yin Qiao San  depends on the observation of  the child with the following symptoms:
  • fever
  • headache
  • wind swelling

Or use Sang Ju Yin when the child is observed with:
  • sore throat
  • cough

The words (Jie Biao) in the above picture are found in all TCM contemporary as well as classical books which means resolving the superficial symptoms observed like running nose, coughing, sore throat, feverish temperature, etc.
I'll leave you now so that you would have more time to digest this blog and other references.

Preview

I had completed the treatment for cold and hot wind virus invasion in the TCM perspective.  The next blog would be the new chapter on:
  • Flu with Cold phlegm trapped deeply and
  • How to Relief Cough and Ease Asthmatic Condition

by warming the lung and dispersing the cold, dissolving the deep phlegm and relieving the asthmatic condition.  Treatment formulas are:
  • Xiao Qing Long Tang
  • She Gan Ma Huang Tang

How To Analyse The Therapeutic Functions Of The Various Decoctions Part Twenty One

Hey, I'm back to continue on today's topic which is on the selection and reason why they are the minister's herbs and 4th Division Officer's herbs in the decoction, Sang Ju Yin:

This is how to analyse the therapeutic functions of the various decoctions(part 21).

  • Minister's herbs - Bo He
  • Division 4th Officer's herbs - Jie Geng, Xin Ren, Lian Qiao, Lu Gen

As you may realise by now the above herbs are repeated in both decoctions:
  • Yin Qiao San
  • Sang Ju Yin
The main difference would be unveiled in the next blog together with Gan Cao which is a very standard messenger's herb.  So for now, there's no necessity to repeat all the thresholds analysis for the five Herbs, moreover, they can be found in my previous blogs.  Inevitably, it would serve as a quick revision to implant stronger memory than ever.

However, I'll repeat the purposes of the Minister's and 4th Division Officer's herbs here, for a better differentiation.

Minister's Herb

Minister's herb primarily assists the monarch's herb to:
  • achieve the therapeutic role
  • increase the healing effect.

Division 4 Officer

  • The division 4 Officer's herb coordinates with the monarch and minister herbs to enhance the therapeutic effect of the decoction as well as directly treat minor complications.
  • It would also slow down the strong effect of monarch and minister herbs.
These are the useful and discriminating points of each herb and are depicted as shown:
  1. Bo He - (Xin Liang Tou Zhen Li Yan)
  2. Jie Geng - (Xin Ku Ping Qing Re Li Yan)
  3. Lian Qiao -  (Ku Liang Xiao Yong Jie Du)
  4. North Xing Ren - (Ku Wen Chu Fan Qing Xin Huo Jiang Qi)
  5. South Xing Ren - (Gan Wen Run Fei Zhi Ke)
  6. Lu Gen - (Gan Liang Chu Fan Sheng Jin)

At this point, it is very normal to say when not to select Xin Ren as the Minister's herb instead of Bo He.  The answer is obvious, only the Xin Liang Property of Bo He would be able to supplement the Monarch's herbs and by nature, Xing Ren is lukewarm which is not ideal in this selection. However, Xing Ren would lubricate the Lung to ease and drop cough as its special property to treat minor complications.

The rest of the explanations are as follows:

Minister's Herb

Bo He uses its basic property (Xin Liang) to supplement the Monarch's herbs to combat the hot wind virus invasion more effectively.  The other functions (Tou Zhen and Li Yan) are explained in my earlier blogs.

The other 4th Division Officer's Herbs are:
  1. Jie Geng - uses its (Xin Ku Ping) properties to clear the airway of the Lung by removing heat in the Lung and as a result, it can soothe throat soreness. (Qing Re Li Yan)
  2. Lian Qiao - uses its (Ku Liang) properties to purge out the hot wind flu invasion in the TCM perspective with (Ku) referring to bitterness and (Liang) referring to coolness. Literally, (Xiao Yong Jie Du) means eliminating carbuncle through detoxification.
  3. North Xing Ren - uses its (Ku Wen Chu Fan) bitterness to enter the heart and regulate the following:
    • To ease and alleviate deeper worry(Chu Fan) like something bothering the mind
    • Excrete heat from the heart(Qing Xin Huo) lower the lung's Qi. (Jiang Qi)
  4. South Xing Ren - would use this sweetness (Gan Wen) to lubricate the Lung (Run Fei) to ease and drop cough (Zhi Ke)You would find that when the child has improved from the àsthmatic condition, however, there would be a sure sign of dry coughing experienced as there was an infection at the respiratory tract initially.
  5. Lu Gen - uses its sweetness and coldness (Gan Liang) to remove the heat accumulated in the Lung. Literately, (Chu Fan) is referred to as removing anxiety and  (Sheng Jin) refers to as well-hydrated to quench thirst.
I'll leave you now so that you would have more time to digest this blog and other references.

Best of all,
