Hey, I'm back to continue on the analysis of the next Minister's herb in An Gong Niu Huang Wan which is Yu Jin.
Yu Jin is the sun-dried sliced herb as shown in the picture above. It's a flowering plant in the ginger family Zingiberaceae. It is a perennial, rhizomatous, herbaceous plant native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that requires temperatures between 20 and 30 °C and high annual rainfall to thrive.
There are 3 species in the family which are used as Yu Jin and they are:
And it is commonly better known as edible turmeric.

The reasons why Yu Jin is selected as the ministers' herb which is further break into 3 parts as below:
1) it is a similar natural powerful regulative remedy for :
A) distending pain in Chest,ribs and the abdomen,
B) Aub: (1) oligomenorrhea
(2) polymenorrhea.
(3) amenorrhea
(4) dysmenorrhea, due mainly to accumulated Qi in the liver turning into heat in the TCM perspective. (Read liver fundamentals) AUB refer to as abnormal uterine bleeding.
2) it is a very effective remedy for
- Epilepsy
- Dirilium
- Unsubdued sweltering heat
- Stroke-induced coma
Bleeding(haemorrhagic)
Relief Shock and Resuscitation
We are still within the perimeter of the above and not drift away.
Association to a Specific Meridian Channel
Yu Jin is the rhizome of the perennial plant and therefore only the underground root is used.
It is associated with:
- Heart
- Liver
- Gall bladder - Meridian Channel respectively
Specific Taste
The specific taste of Yu Jin is bitter and pungent.
Specific Properties
The Specific Property of Yu Jin is cold.
As for the rule of thumb:
Apply (Huó xuè zhǐ tòng, xíng qì jiě yù, liáng xiě qīng xīn, lì dǎn tuì huáng) whenever Yu Jin is used.
