Hey, I'm back to start on one new special technique only used by TCM practitioner. This is the little vein-like fingerprint show up only upon rubbing over the infant's index finger. This is How to use Observation, Olfaction, Inquiry\Auscultation, and Palpation in Paediatrics. (part 4)
Vein print on infant's finger
Hi, Ladies and gentlemen, this is beginning to be very interesting and you can try it with any baby of age up to 3 years. And after 3 years of age, depending on the child's development, you may or not see this tiny vein appearing. The actual path of this vein starts from Hegu to the radial side of the index finger. (see diagram for Hegu)
This is an additional technique used by TCM practitioner because only we adopt palpation whether in adult or children during the diagnostic test with the patients. So this also mean reading this vein must be in conjunction with one thumb touching the normal area where palpating the pulse of the infant in Bone Proportion Measurement.
So this is another method where I'll release to you in a short while, okay.

Vein Observation
The normal revelation upon rub and release would show a light purple colour all within the wind segment. The observation should include the vein:
- 1) floats up easily and indicates light, acute infection
- 2) sink in and not conspicuous indicates a more serious infection
- 3) light purplish vein indicates heat intensified in the TCM perspective
- 4) red vein indicates a cold and overall deficiency in the TCM perspective
- 5) long vein stretch into Qi segment indicates a serious infection and so on.
As mentioned earlier, the vein observation must go in conjunction with the ONE THUMB
palpating the pulse. As the infant's pulsation area along the wrist is very short, that's why the bone position and its proportional measurement must be accurate and precise regardless of whether the body is large or small.
At the same time, it's very beneficial when searching for the correct spot on the body for acupuncture treatment.
The correct Palpation Method
Just before reaching the one thumb palpation, I have to point out the precise point where the TCM practitioners or the doctor read your pulse rate. This is the protruded point on the supinated side of the radial bone of the forearm called the Radial Styloid Process.
And it is:
- the middle finger that will touch on this point called (guan) meaning border or the surrounded spot with border.
- the index finger will touch the front point called the inch and
- the ring finger will touch the back point called the feet
Please remember: the orientation is the index finger must be next to the scaphoid bone on the supinated side of the forearm as shown in the picture.

The Bone Proportion Measurement is very lengthy and needs some diagrams to make it easy to digest and I'll put it in the very first paragraph of the continuing part 5 of the same topic.
Best of all
