This is how to analyze the therapeutic functions of the various Decoctions part 117

Hey, I'm back to continue on the analysis of the next Minister's herb in An Gong Niu Huang Wan which is Bing Pian.

However, there are 4 other Minister's herbs which played a vital role in assisting the monarch's herbs to resuscitate the critical condition and they are analysed in the previous blogs.  Nevertheless, it's necessary to highlight them here as:

  • Very importantly, Huang Qin, Huang Lian and Zhi Zi actually assist Niu Huang to eliminate heat from the pericardium in the TCM perspective.

There's a natural way on how to remember this herb is by looking at the Chinese character for the word {She} and is characterized by the word 'deer' forming the word {She} and follow by the fragrance material.
And from here, what's is She Xiang?  It  is the discharged musk from male deer species better known as the Moschus Berezouskii Flerov found in the
forested and mountainous parts of Asia. Only the males secrete musk from the musk gland, or pod, located between their navel and genitals.

What we see in the photograph is the whole pod or gland removed from the deer's abdomen and best superior grade is the granular paste obtained by opening the gland.

This is how to analyze the therapeutic functions of the various Decoctions part 114

Hey, I'm back to tell you that we had completed the analysis of Ling Jiao Gou Teng Tang of which Gān Cao is the last herb there to regulate the whole Decoction as the messenger's herb.  You should be very familiar with Gan Cao by now and perhaps a little brush up through the quick revision is good.

I'll move on to analyze the next popular formula, namely;

which is widely used in our topic still within

Relief Shock and Resuscitation

And

after completing the above analysis.

Concerning the previous blog:

3)  When the sweltering heat becomes so severe that heat had penetrated the Ying Xue level, so much so that convulsion would turn into unconsciousness, the treatment formulas are:

  • An Gong Niu Huang Wan
  • Zhi Bao Dan

(apply:- Zhen Jing Kai Qiao, Qing Re Jie Du) as prime when encountering this situation.

First and foremost, we are awared that the reasons for these pathological phenomenas such as:

to take place is due to this pathogenic heat had  invaded the pericardium in the TCM perspective.
They are classified as pathogenic heat obstruction and that's why we needed to use An Gong Niu Huang Wan to pacify the nerves and eliminate all these obstructions.

The analysis of the  An Gong Niu Huang Wan will commence in the next blog with the 1st monarch's herb called Niu Huang which is commonly known as cow's gall bladder stone.

Just before I would leave you, these are the twelve ingredients altogether formulating the mystifying An Gong Niu Huang Wan.
By the way, there is one optional item being used to strengthen the calming effect of this pill and is none other than edible gold leaf.  We would discuss it as the 13th herb after honey coating.

  • Niu Huang
  • She Xiang
  • Xi Jiao
  • Huang Lian
  • Huang Qin
  • Zhi Zi
  • Bing Pian
  • Yu Jin
  • Zhu Sha
  • Zhen Zhu
  • Xiong Huang
  • Feng Mi
  • Jin Bo - optional

I would like to leave you now with this blog so as to give you more time to digest it.

This is how to analyze the therapeutic functions of the various Decoctions part 113

Hey, I'm back after a few days to analyze the second last herb in Ling Jiao Gou Teng Tang which is Fu Shen.

Relief Shock and Resuscitation

We are still within the perimeter of the above and not drift away.

And Fu Shen would be the stand alone herb in the 4th divisional officer's herbs arena.

However, it would carry out it's duty as 4th divisional officer's herb to assist with the therapeutic functions of the monarch's herbs to calm the anxious mood of the child.

In another words, more importantly, this means and applies to pacify the shock from epilepsy and limbs jerkings in our topic and also in the TCM perspective.

Please take note of the aforesaid paragraph as both Fu Shen and Fu Ling can pacify shock, HOWEVER, Fu Shen is much more powerful than the latter.

Incidentally, why do you think, this herb is called Fu Shen and nothing else.  Ancient physician was really very intelligent indeed.

So, today's topic is very interesting because we would be touching on 2 herbs related and resemble each other very closely.

Sclerotium

What's Fu Shen in the TCM perspective? It's actually a sclerotium that grows on the roots of host plant  (fungus more like a parasite), formed Fu Ling  (Poris cocos).  Then, it's the whitish colour cut-off portion from Fu Ling that contain the roots of the host plant called red pine and masson pine.

Incidentally, red pine is better known as Pinus Tabuliformus from the polyporaceae family.

Let's start with the threshold established so far:

The reasons for selecting Fu Shen as the 4th divisional officer's herb are:
  • 1) Fu Shen is sedative and is more powerful in overcoming anxious mood than Fu Ling.
  • 2) Fu Shen is diuretic in nature, so it can ease mild edema, urinary hesitancy.
  • 3) it would also strengthen the functions of the spleen in the TCM perspective.

Association to a Specific Meridian Channel

Fu Shen is associated with the

Fu Shen

Next, I'll touch on the specific property of Fu Shen which is neutral.

This is how to analyze the therapeutic functions of the various Decoctions part 112

Hey, I'm back after a short break to continue on the analysis of Zhu Ru found in the formula Ling Jiao Gou Teng Tang.

As mentioned in the previous blog, Zhu Ru would complement with Bei Mu to further dissolve the thick phlegm so as to provide a clearer air passageway.

The same question is asked and what does Zhu Ru coordinate in the whole Decoction?  I'm reiterating that it serves to dissolve phlegm that block the air passageway, thus allowing a better resuscitation realized.

This is how to analyze the therapeutic functions of the various Decoctions part 112.

The reasons why Zhu Ru is selected as the 4th Division Officer's herb are:

  • 1) Primarily Zhu Ru is able to dissolve thick yellowish phlegm and complement Bei Mù to provide a clearer air passageway in the resuscitation platform.
  • 2) As Cardinal anxiety is found to be caused by the upsurging Heaty yellowish phlegm, removing these phlegm would also resolve anxiety in the TCM perspective.
  • 3) It can stop vomitting due to the upsurging heat from the stomach.

Zhu Ru which is the slightly greenish, shade-dried middle section fibre layer after scraping off the outer harden skin of  the bamboo plant better known as Bambusa Breviflora Munro.

The other species under the same family known as  Phyllostachys Nigra Monro is also used.
